ENTRAINMENT ARRESTOR
The
Polybaffle
Entrainment Arrestor represents the most advanced system for the efficient and effective
removal of entrained sugar from vapour leaving vacuum pans and evaporators.
In normal operation sugar is lost from evaporators, pre-evaporators and vacuum pans through
droplets of the sugar solution becoming entrained in the vapour leaving the vessel. As vessels
are worked closer to their design limits, the losses due to entrainment become more and more
excessive. The Poly-baffle arrestor was developed in the sugar industry to meet these conditions.
The loss of sugar through entrainment results in:-
1. Lower sugar recovery in the factory, with a direct reduction in revenue in lost sugar sales,
2. Contamination of boiler make-up water where the condensate is returned to the boiler, or
energy losses where it is not,
3. Contamination of factory effluent water, causing environmental pollution.

Polybaffle
Arrestors should be installed in ALL NEW vessels Kestner separators, Semi Kestners, Roberts vessels and Vacuum
Pans, Batch and Continuous, including existing vessels where there is a measurable sugar loss of over 30 ppm in the vapour leaving
the vessel.
They are used in:-
1.
Full kestner separators and semi kestner or pre evaporators and first vessels
because vapour condensate is usually
returned to the boilers for energy conservation.
2.
Intermediate Evaporator
vessels because their duty is to produce concentrated liquor, not “sweet water” condensate. Even
though the condensates are reused and often “re-cycled” as imbibition and washing waters, they represent a sugar and an energy
loss.
3.
Final Evaporators Vessels
because this is where to expect the greatest savings from losses, and also because less sugar in
factory effluent water means less pollution and
4.
Vacuum Pans
both
Batch
and
Continuous
because higher concentration of liquor means high losses in entrainment.
conditions here are similar to the final evaporator where sugar is lost to effluent waters.
Full installation, assembly and maintenance instructions are issued with each Arrestor. all Arrestor components are in Stainless Steel.
Side and end plates and support brackets in mild steel can be part of the Arrestor supply or
fabricated on site from detailed drawings provided by Sugarequip. Other material grades can be supplied.
Over 370 units have been supplied to 15 countries over the past 20 years.
