PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

The Sugar Milling Research Institute (SMRI) in South Africa has developed a new device for measuring cane preparation called the Displacement Rate Index or DRI.

Traditionally cane prepaation to assess shredder performance has been measured by the pol in open cells method or the preparation index (PI) method. This has required two samples of cane.

Now the DRI uses only ONE SAMPLE OF CANE.
The DRI washes a sample of prepared cane with a reticulated water supply. DRI is automatically calculated from the rate of increase in brix concentration throughout the washing procedure.

ADDED VALUE OF THE DRI

  • Easy and quick installation.
  • Uses one sample of prepared cane as against two samples.
  • Easy to follow screen with prompt instructions and readings within two minutes.
  • Ten-minute cycle time against one hour of other testing methods.
  • Shredder performance can be determined at a lower cost therefore allowing more regular measurement.
  • Does not require any analytical calculations.
  • Low maintenance: once a shift washing the machine out with household bleach and occasional cleaning of the sieve.
